The St. Paul Area Local has the following scholarship opportunities available to its members.  Applications are available in the Union Office on 6th Street, the stewards office at the Eagan P & DC; or contact us at 651-778-1637 and we will mail them to you.

ST. PAUL, MN AREA LOCAL APWU

HARRY WILLIAMS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

            Three $1000.00 scholarships to be awarded to son or daughter of an active, retired or deceased member of the St. Paul, MN Area Local American Postal Workers Union.  Rules and applications are available in the stewards office, and will be printed in the February issue of the ‘Postmark’ or call the Union Office (651) 778-1637.  Application must be postmarked by February 28, 2011.

 

 

MN AFL-CIO SCHOLARSHIPS

            Information and forms for these scholarships can be obtained at the Union Office (651)778-1637, the stewards office at the Eagan P & DC, or at the MN AFL-CIO web site (www.mnaflcio.org).    The Minnesota AFL-CIO Scholarship is awarded to five (5) recipients in 2011 to graduating high school seniors who are union members or the dependents of union members.  Applicants must have a straight “B” average or better and attend a post-secondary institution within the State of Minnesota.   Deadline is April 30, 2011.  For more information contact 651-227-7647 or 1-800-652-9004 or www.mnaflcio.org.

 

  • David K. Roe Scholarship

(Two $1000.00 scholarships awarded for a post-secondary institution (within the State of Minnesota).

 

  • Hubert H. Humphrey Memorial Award

(Two $1000.00 scholarships awarded for post-secondary institution (within the State of  Minnesota).

 

  • Donald Pilla Memorial Award

(One $1000.00 scholarship awarded for vocational/technical school (within the State of Minnesota).

 

                                                                                                                                   

MARTIN DUFFY ADULT LEARNER SCHOLARSHIP               

            Two $500.00 scholarships.  Winners to be selected by lot.  Scholarships awarded to union members affiliated with the MN AFL-CIO not high school graduating dependents.)  Deadline April 30, 2011.  For more information contact the U of M Labor Education Service at 612-624-5020 or www.mnafl-cio.org.

 

APWU SCHOLARSHIPS

  • E.C. Hallbeck Memorial Scholarship
  • Vocational Scholarship

Awarded to high school seniors of APWU members.  Applications must be received by March 15, 2011.   Applications and further information may also be obtained at the National APWU website at www.apwu.org.

 

 

NELLIE STONE JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP

            Scholarships available for racial minority union member or child, grandchild or spouse of a union member for post secondary education at one of Minnesota’s State Universities or at one of the two year community and technical colleges that are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU).  (Those attending the University of Minnesota or a private school are not eligible for this scholarship.  For further information contact 651-738-1404 or 1-866-738-5238.  Deadline is May 1, 2011.   

 

 

APWU ACCIDENT BENEFIT ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

One $1,000.00 scholarship.  Entrants must be a graduating high school senior of an APWU member.  Winner is selected by luck of the draw.  Deadline is May 15, 2011.   Scholarship Form will be available February 1, 2011.  They will be available at the Union Office, steward’s office or on the web at www.apwu-aba.org and click on the ‘Scholarship’ link at the top.

 

 

FEEA  2011 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

(Federal Employee Education Assistance Program)                               

            Current civilian federal employees and their dependent family members (spouse/child).  Applicants must be current high school seniors or college students working toward an accredited degree and enrolled in a two or four year undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate program.  All applicants must have at least a 3.0 cumulative  grade point average (CGPA) unweighted on a 4.0 scale.  Application package must be postmarked no later than March 25 2011. Applications and additional information is also available on the web at www.feea.org.

Rules and Regulations

for

Harry Williams Memorial Scholarship Program

 

 


1.       Applicant must be son or daughter of an active, retired or deceased member of the St. Paul Area Local of the American Postal Workers Union.

 

2.       Applicant’s parent or legal guardian must have been a member of APWU St. Paul Area Local, in good standing, for a total of at least one year immediately preceding application or must have been a member for one year immediately preceding death or retirement.

 

3.       Applicant must be a senior attending high school or other corresponding secondary school.

 

4.       Sons and daughters of APWU National and St. Paul Area Local Executive Board members and Hospital Plan National Officers are not eligible for consideration.

 

5.       Scholarship recipient must attend an accredited post-secondary school of his or her choice. Applicant must make own application to the school.

 

6.       Applications for a scholarship must be made on an official application form.  Completed application forms must be sent to Harry Williams Memorial Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 65065, St. Paul, MN 55165, and postmarked not later than February 28 of the year of graduation.

 

7.       Scholarship must be used towards pursuing post-secondary school education.

 

8.       Harry Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide three scholarships per year.

 

9.       If award winner fails to attend post-secondary school in the award year, the award will go to an alternate.

 

10.    Winners must rank in the upper fifty percentile of their high school or other corresponding secondary school graduation class.

 

11.    Each Memorial Scholarship will be $1,000.00 for one year of post-secondary school.

 

12.     The amount of the Scholarship will be deposited with the post-secondary school attended by the student.  When the recipient notifies the St. Paul Area APWU he or she has been accepted, $1,000.00 will be sent to the business office to be applied to the cost of tuition, room and board.

 

13.     An award winner may not accept more than three thousand five hundred dollars ($3,500.00) annually from other scholarships.  If the amount exceeds $3,500.00, the Harry Williams Memorial Scholarship will be forfeited and will be awarded to an alternate.

 

14.     APWU St. Paul Area Local may discontinue awarding new scholarships if funds do not permit.

 

15.    The Scholarship Committee shall consist of up to six (6) members.  Two (2) of these members shall consist of the current elected Secretary and Treasurer.  One (1) member shall be a current elected Trustee to be appointed by the President. The remaining members shall be appointed by the President.  The President shall be the chief overseer of this Committee.

 

16.    The Committee shall be convened by March 15 or the Monday thereafter. The Treasurer will have verified all the membership qualifications by this date.

 

17.    The application forms for the scholarship shall appear in the Postmark in the months of January and February.  The draws shall be held at the April General Membership Meeting of the St. Paul Area Local APWU.

 

18.    The Committee, upon verification of each application, shall place said applications in plain “like type” envelope and the envelopes are to be placed in a drawing container.  There shall be three (3) winners and a sufficient number of alternates drawn.

 

19.    All disputes concerning the Scholarship Program shall be submitted to the President within thirty (30) days of the drawing, in written form.  They shall be placed before the Scholarship Committee for review.  They shall be answered in writing, within fifteen (15) days.

 

20.    These rules governing the Harry Williams Memorial Scholarship Program can only be amended, changed, or deleted once a year at the November General Membership Meeting.
